Scooter navigation
Google Maps scooter — why it does not work
Google Maps has no scooter mode. Bike mode and car mode give routes that are illegal or unsafe for snorfiets and bromfiets in the Netherlands.
Try the scooter alternativeNo Google Maps scooter setting
In Google Maps you can pick car, transit, walking, cycling, and flights — no snorfiets, no bromfiets. Millions of Dutch scooter riders must improvise with the wrong mode.
That is not user error. The app is not built for Dutch plate-colour rules, rijbaan zones, or G11/G12a signs.
What goes wrong with bike mode (snorfiets)
Snorfiets riders tap the bicycle icon and ride — until they are in Amsterdam on a cycle path where the carriageway is mandatory, or outside the city on a path that does not connect while the road was shorter.
Google Maps does not know snorfiets-op-rijbaan zones. Every day Amsterdam riders go illegal because their navigator says "bike".
What goes wrong with car mode (bromfiets)
Bromfiets riders using car mode are guided over trunk roads where yellow plate is banned. Bike mode sends them onto G11 cycle paths where only blue plate may ride.
The alternative is scooter-specific navigation. Scootmaps is free, knows both plates, and is built for NL rules — test the same route next to Google Maps and compare.
